ONE OF THE MANY “INSPIRATION STORIES” BEHIND SAFECRUSH
Why is it “normal” for nurses to crush pills all day, every day and hurt themselves? To us, this seems incomprehensible. And, quite frankly, it is. We subsequently discovered that the incessant “banging” of pill crushing deeply disturbs elderly patients. We were not brought up in or trained in the nursing profession, but this “normal” shouldn’t be “normal”. Unfortunately, for nurses, from college to workplace, this is “normal”. Medical professionals spend an inordinate amount of time and money to obtain their degree. And, once they receive their degree, they go to a workplace that immediately exposes them, repetitively, every day, to injury and illness. Let us change the World together to a new “normal”; a “normal” where the pill crushing protocol no longer exposes nurses to injury and illness and no longer disturbs our elderly citizens. OUR HISTORY
The Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare (OHSAH) in British Columbia (BC) was conceived between healthcare employers and union representatives. The Board of Directors consisted of representatives from employer and union organizations, including the Health Employers Association of BC, the Hospital Employees Union, the Health Sciences Association, the British Columbia Nurses Union and the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union.

An accord, ultimately resulted in the creation of OHSAH; an agency with the goal of reducing workplace injuries and illness in healthcare workers and returning injured workers back to the job quickly and safely. The mission of OHSAH was to work with all members of the healthcare community to develop guidelines and programs designed to promote better health and safety practices.

Very interestingly, “pill-crushing” and related employee medical issues and injuries showed up on OHSAH’s radar almost immediately. It was such a concern that OHSAH began an initiative with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Health Technology Research Group to research, design, develop, test and commercialize an automatic/electric pill crusher.

Prototypes were developed and feedback was obtained internally and externally through focus groups and a pilot process where eight identical units were manufactured to allow for testing and evaluation within the workplace setting. The feedback OHSAH received from each of the user groups was extremely valuable.

The next steps for OSHAH were to substantially modify and improve the second generation prototypes, apply for patents, create another one-off manufacturable prototype and commercialize the pill crusher. However, due to a variety of reasons, OHSAH was uncertain how to proceed through the next crucial stages of product development and business development, thus, they halted the project. It was at this time that Serrano Medical Solutions began discussions with OHSAH to commercialize the pill crusher. Subsequently, Serrano purchased the patents and the worldwide rights to manufacture and distribute the OHSAH-inspired pill crusher. Serrano, recipients of OHSAH’s comprehensive R & D, is launching the most sophisticated pill crushing solution in the world, SafeCrush™.
